Scovia and d-light

d.light Appeal

d.lights represent nothing short of a revolution for the communities in which we work… Help us supply a d.light for every one of the children we support!

d.lights are durable solar powered lanterns with an incredible 8 hour battery life.

Did you realise that 1 in 4 children in the world are unable to study at home due to lack of electricity in their homes?

Our children get home around 6.00 pm in the evening. Just imagine if you could not do your homework due to lack of light. It would leave you at a significant disadvantage over your peers. Many children in rural Kenya face this issue on a daily basis. The d.light is a sustainable and cost effective solution.

For a donation of only £8.00 you can help us change the future of a generation. The Nasio Trust has already placed 300 d.lights into family homes in western Kenya, and are hoping to place 300 more over the next 6 months.

Help us achieve our goal and become part of this sustainable revolution.

Cost savings

D.light lanterns can completely eliminate the need for kerosene lanterns in households. The cost savings can be significant, as families may spend 10 to 25 percent of their monthly income on kerosene oil. For a typical farmer or shopkeeper, d.light products will pay for themselves in as few as two months, meaning customers will save money every week for years to come.

Income generation

The bright and reliable light from our products supports income-generating activities such as farming and retail. A United Nations Development Program study demonstrates that household businesses with improved lighting have up to a 30 percent increase in income due to increased productivity at night. d.light customers have reported an increase in monthly income by as much as 50 percent from the extended workday.

Healthy and safe homes

Kerosene lamps are a key contributor to indoor air pollution, which is documented to have disastrous health effects, ranging from tuberculosis to cancer. Kerosene lanterns have also caused countless deaths by ingestion, burn injuries and related complications, and fatal fires. At a minimum, kerosene users experience diminished eyesight and visual health. d.light lanterns are extremely safe and use super-bright LEDs that do not emit any pollutants.

Reduction in carbon emissions

According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory research, the annual greenhouse gas emissions from fuel-based lighting in developing countries is nearly 200 million tons. A single kerosene lamp emits nearly half a ton of CO2 over a lifetime of 5 years (UNFCCC). Every d.light lantern purchased can completely replace one or more kerosene lamps, contributing to global carbon emissions reductions on the scale of hundreds of thousands of tons.
