Breaking the cycle of poverty

George Mudenyo Kadima Medical Centre

Kakamega County faces severe healthcare challenges, with high rates of HIV (4.7%), maternal mortality (316 per 100,000 live births), and widespread diseases like malaria and TB. Poor healthcare infrastructure and endemic poverty leave many without access to essential medical services. The Nasio Trust is working to close these critical gaps, providing affordable, life-saving healthcare to a growing rural population.

Bridging the Healthcare Gap

The George Mudenyo Kadima Medical Centre (GMK Medical Centre) was founded in 2016 to provide accessible, high-quality primary healthcare in Mumias West. The need for this facility became heartbreakingly clear in 2013 when a young boy, Livingstone, lost his life on the 10-mile journey to the nearest hospital. His tragic story exposed the urgent need for local medical services.

You can read Livingstone’s full story here.

Since its launch, the GMK Medical Centre has become a vital healthcare hub, offering preventive, curative, and community-based medical services to thousands of people each year.

Our Services

We focus on key healthcare needs to improve the lives of rural communities:

  • HIV Prevention & Treatment – Free HIV care, including testing, treatment, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condom distribution, and anti-retroviral therapy (ART).
  • Hepatitis B Testing – As part of the WHO’s triple-elimination strategy, we provide the only free Hepatitis B testing in the county, leading efforts to detect and treat the virus.
  • Maternal & Nutritional Care – Our ante- and post-natal care services ensure safer pregnancies and deliveries. We also provide family planning and nutritional support for mothers and babies facing malnutrition.
  • Affordable Healthcare Insurance – We help vulnerable families access Kenya’s National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), ensuring they receive the care they need.

Expanding to Meet Growing Needs

With climate change worsening health conditions and government healthcare funding declining, the demand for our services is rapidly increasing. To address this, we are campaigning to expand the GMK Medical Centre, adding:

  • X-Ray facilities for better diagnostics
  • Operating rooms to provide essential surgical care
  • A mortuary to offer dignity to bereaved families

With your support, we can bring comprehensive, life-saving medical care to more people in need. Join us in making healthcare accessible for all.

Here is a summary of our achievement’s in 2023.

Jiggers: A Preventable Crisis with Life-Changing Consequences

Jiggers are initially thought to come from Central and South America, the jigger parasite found its way to Africa, likely through human migration. Once it burrows into the skin – most commonly in the feet – it causes severe inflammation, ulceration, and unbearable itching.

Left untreated, the infection can escalate to tetanus, gangrene, or even the loss of limbs.
