The Porridge Kitchen

From humble beginnings…

Our Porridge Kitchen was established to provide malnourished children with the essential nutrients they need to thrive. We run weekly sessions that include weigh-ins conducted by our nutritionist to monitor the children’s progress. During these sessions, we distribute porridge flour and provide each child with a warm bowl of porridge to ensure they receive vital nutrition.
The porridge we provide is enriched with spirulina from the Nasio Trust’s Spirulina Farm, which is packed with vitamins and minerals and has proven health benefits, particularly in managing malnutrition.

More than just a Porridge Kitchen…

Since its creation in July 2023, the Porridge Kitchen has evolved beyond its initial purpose, becoming a vital lifeline for both young mothers and their babies. Currently, our program supports 34 children and 33 mothers.

Since its creation in July 2023, the Porridge Kitchen has evolved beyond its initial purpose, becoming a vital lifeline for both young mothers and their babies. Currently, our program supports 34 children and 33 mothers.

We have identified that addressing malnutrition is a long-term challenge, making this project crucial in promoting children’s health within our community. It has also fostered a strong support network among mothers, who are encouraged to share parenting advice and empower one another with valuable tips. Each week, we rotate sessions to different homes, and participants are invited to contribute items that benefit the porridge kitchen or the host family, which not only promotes a strong sense of community spirit but also emphasises the importance of giving back.
Additionally, the Nasio Trust has equipped participating mothers with kitchen gardens, creating a sustainable source of food at home and enhancing their self-sufficiency. The group also offers guidance on how to expand and successfully cultivate these gardens, ensuring that families can grow their own nutritious food.

Although initially focused on combating child malnutrition, our porridge kitchen has evolved into a vital initiative that nourishes and nurtures vulnerable children while also empowering and supporting the mothers involved.

Looking ahead…

This project has tremendous to expand its reach to more vulnerable children and mothers. The positive outcomes are already evident, and we are confirdent that with adequate funding and time, it can develop into a vibrant community hub, providing young children and their mothers with a stronger start and a brighter future.

"I had no hope of being educated but now have the chance to access education, food, clothing and medication. I will work hard and dream to become a builder, to construct homes for people who don’t have shelter."
