The Importance Of A Wind Up Radio
January 2021

Nasio’s Christmas 2020 appeal was a great success and many families benefitted from our Christmas boxes which contained a wind-up radio along with a food parcel and an item of clothing for a child.

The wind-up radio was included as a direct response to the Covid-19 situation, providing a way of ensuring that important information reaches our poor, vulnerable communities. Electricity is not a luxury that Nasio families can enjoy and with no need to worry about the cost of batteries a wind-up version is the best way to reach people, especially for those with low levels of literacy.

Wind-up radios also provide a much needed source of entertainment and joy for our families.

Esther Adhiambo, a widow with three children, describes what the radio has meant to them:

“Last Christmas was a very happy and amazing holiday for us because my children had new Christmas clothes and food parcel. It brought smiles on our faces and we are so grateful for that. I also received a wind up radio and it is really entertaining us. We are able to listen to news and also all the current affairs on a daily basis. My boy Calvin likes dancing so he really dances to every tune that plays in the radio.

I just want to let you know that I am so much grateful and always praying for my children supporters and all of you out there who are helping us raise our children holistically. May God bless you all.”

Our appeal is now over, and we’re pleased to advise all our children have a radio!

Changes to the Kenyan Healthcare System Leaves Thousands At Risk

Kenya’s new Social Health Authority (SHA) was meant to expand access to free healthcare. For the communities Nasio serves, it is doing the opposite.

The transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHA has introduced income-based premiums, digital registration, and phone-dependent systems that many families simply cannot access—particularly women, children, and the poorest households.
