Ollie’s Volunteering Diary: Visiting the GMK Medical Centre/Classes
September 2023

In summer 2023, Ollie Passingham spent time volunteering with the Nasio Trust in Kenya. In our “Ollie’s Volunteering Diary” series he shares key parts of his experience. Read more below:

My experience at the Nasio Trust’s GMK medical centre was eye-opening and heart-warming. The project is focused on improving access to healthcare services for vulnerable communities in Mumias.

I had the opportunity to visit the medical clinic and meet Dr. Godfrey and his amazing team, who were working tirelessly to attend to all patients with compassion and care. The centre offers essential medical services, including vaccinations, antenatal care, and treatments to common illnesses.

Their aim is to upgrade to new equipment in order to offer more services and increase the number of people treated.

Beyond the clinic, this project conducted health outreach programs at Nasio’s ‘safe space’. That raises awareness about preventive measures towards sex for young people. Witnessing the efforts of the Nasio Trust’s healthcare team and the positive impact they have had on the community left me with a profound appreciation for the value of accessible and affordable healthcare.
