The Nasio Story

In 2000, in a small village in western Kenya, the late Irene Mudenyo found an abandoned baby in a sugarcane plantation on her farm. He had been left in a blanket and must have been there for at least three days. The baby, who was about three months old, was was severely dehydrated and under-nourished […]

Moses begins his three years studies in dental technology
September 2021

My name is Moses Mudenyo, and I’m one of the beneficiaries of the Nasio Trust. I am so happy to inform you that I successfully completed my secondary education and am now joining Kenya Medical Training College to pursue a Diploma in Dental Technology, a course which I am so passionate about and am planning to give back to the community on completion.

I had an opportunity through the Nasio Trust to volunteer in different projects and programs in the community for the last four months after completing my secondary education. This included the Peer Education programme where we mentored primary and secondary students on different aspects of life including Reproductive Health education and drug and drug abuse, and we encouraged them to work hard in school. I also participated in the Jiggers campaign programme, and at the GMK Medical Centre I helped to arrange drugs at the pharmacy, and with stock taking and registering patients at the reception.

I really enjoyed my volunteering experience at the hospital. It is during this time that I realised that we had special medical services which were vital, and which were missing at our facility. This included Dental services, Ophthalmology services and E.N.T. (Ear, Nose and Throat) services. Most patients who came to our facility with these conditions are referred and booked for special clinics in other facilities which is too expensive for most of them to afford. This results in many of them not getting proper medical services, which further complicates their conditions.

I opted to pursue Dental Technology, which is one of the key services that is very important to our facility

I realised this gap and since I had passion to pursue a medical course, I opted to pursue Dental Technology, which is one of the key services that is very important to our facility. As Nasio is currently planning to expand the GMK Medical Centre, once I have completed my three years’ study I plan to set up a dental clinic and help patients who are having dental disorders at our community and cannot get access to those services due to lack of funds.

I am very very happy to have this opportunity to join the Kenya Medical Training College and pursue a three year course in Dental Technology. I am planning to advance even more and do Dental surgery afterwards.

Special thanks to Almighty God for how far I have reached, thanks once more to the Nasio Trust organisation, my family and friends who have continuously supported me throughout my education, they have mentored me and taken care of me.

"I had no hope of being educated but now have the chance to access education, food, clothing and medication. I will work hard and dream to become a builder, to construct homes for people who don’t have shelter."

Publishing in Africa at the London Book Fair By Katie Isbester

In further support of the Nasio Trust’s Library appeal, Katie Isbester talks about her recent trip to the London Book Fair and a fortuitous discovery!

I didn’t mean to go to the talk. There were some 30,000 people at the London Book Fair and I was supposed to meet at least a few of them. Instead I found myself going to a talk on publishing in Africa because of Nasio Trust. I knew it was trying to build a library, the first of its kind in Western Kenya, and I was rather curious.
