What’s It Like Doing Work Experience With Nasio UK?
August 2023

We were pleased to recently host 3 young adults – Luke, Saloni and Mary, as part of work experience placements. This is what they told us about their time with Nasio:

We were surprised as to how much is required in order to run a charity.

We spent a week working with Nancy in the Nasio UK office for work experience. We were surprised as to how much is required in order to run a charity. We started by counting donations and taking them to the bank. This was a first for all 3 of us so it was a useful experience. We also counted the knitted jumpers and hats that had been made for the newborn babies in Kenya. It was impressive to see how many had been made with a total of 96 sets of jumpers and hats, along with 29 extra hats. We learnt how to cross reference spreadsheets to check that information was up to date. Following this, we scheduled a post on The Nasio Trust’s different platforms which we all found enjoyable to see the analytics from our post. Throughout the week we had been spending time researching The Turing Scheme, which is a government project to help fund trips abroad to let young students access a life changing opportunity, with the end goal of presenting to the board what we had researched. It was quite nerve racking, but we think it went well.

Thank you very much to Nancy and The Nasio Trust for providing us with our work experience week, we found it very informative, and we learnt many key life skills that we can take with us into our futures. As well as being educational, we had a very enjoyable time.

Jiggers: A Preventable Crisis with Life-Changing Consequences

Jiggers are initially thought to come from Central and South America, the jigger parasite found its way to Africa, likely through human migration. Once it burrows into the skin – most commonly in the feet – it causes severe inflammation, ulceration, and unbearable itching.

Left untreated, the infection can escalate to tetanus, gangrene, or even the loss of limbs.
