Women’s Empowerment Programme

The Nasio Trust is committed to empowering women by providing the resources, skills and support they need to transform their lives and communities. Through initiatives like entrepreneurial training, the porridge kitchen, adult education classes, table banking, and much more, we create opportunities that promote confidence, independence, and success.

The impact on the women is profound. Many come to us lacking access to networks, skills, and resources. Through our programs, they gain the knowledge, confidence, and financial independence to start their own businesses, improve their families’ well-being, and lead their communities. Without Nasio’s support, these women would be deprived of the opportunities that foster personal growth and self-reliance.

Here is Elizabeth’s story –

Elizabeth Opuka, is an active member of the Musanda Women’s Group, which works to improve the livelihoods of its members through activities like table banking, merry-go-round savings, soap making, and a community project to eradicate jiggers by smearing houses.

One of the most significant benefits for Elizabeth has been the training in soap making. She now produces liquid soap for her family, eliminating the need to purchase it. Initially made collectively, Elizabeth is now confident she can expand into bar soap production with more capital. Profits from soap sales go into a communal savings fund, shared yearly. This has helped her start a small grocery business, selling items like fish, tomatoes, and onions, which has helped to boost her family’s income.
Through table banking, Elizabeth takes out loans to restock her shop, supporting its growth. The group’s financial backing has been essential to her business success and has helped cover her husband’s medical expenses, ensuring his continued care.

Nasio is not just about providing services; we are building a future where women can believe in their own potential and know that they have the power to shape their own futures.

"I had no hope of being educated but now have the chance to access education, food, clothing and medication. I will work hard and dream to become a builder, to construct homes for people who don’t have shelter."
Saidi Makokha (aged 9 – supported by Nasio)

Jiggers: A Preventable Crisis with Life-Changing Consequences

Jiggers are initially thought to come from Central and South America, the jigger parasite found its way to Africa, likely through human migration. Once it burrows into the skin – most commonly in the feet – it causes severe inflammation, ulceration, and unbearable itching.

Left untreated, the infection can escalate to tetanus, gangrene, or even the loss of limbs.
