Exceptional Students Programme Launch
November 2021
According to Unicef, student enrolment at secondary school is only 53% with numbers varying across Kenya. The impact of poverty has meant families are forced to weigh up choices. Young girls, in particular, are left unable to achieve their full potential, enrolling in schools with poor educational infrastructure and unqualified teachers, or miss out on education entirely.
In March 2021 we launched the Exceptional Student Programme to support mainly exceptional girls from Mumias and Samburu’s hardship areas in western and northern Kenya.
Education can end the cycle of poverty for young people – with education, opportunities develop, families strengthen and economies grow.
Despite personal circumstances (including poverty or the loss of a parent), poor schooling and lack of educational infrastructure, selected students have demonstrated their exceptional performance academically and in attitude. Students must have attained ‘A’ grades and a high pass in their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). We will support and monitor students throughout school and for 4 years after secondary school until they achieve their career aspiration in their chosen field through financial scholarships, mentoring and engagement beyond academics.
It is our hope that with the right mentorship, school and environment, these exceptional students can achieve their full potential and develop into future leaders.
More details are provided on our Sponsor a Child in Need website about the programme and what you can do. Or you can sign up to mentor one of our exceptional students here.
