Further COVID-19 preparation updates from Nancy in Kenya

The official number of cases of COVID-19 in Kenya is now at 25.

Nancy, our CEO, is remaining in Kenya and continues to coordinate Nasio Trust’s response on the ground as the region tightens preparations.

Nasio Trust COVID-19 response: Update 21st March 2020

Nancy Hunt, our CEO, is currently in Kenya and coordinating Nasio’s response on the ground to the pandemic. The first cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in Kenya and Nasio is taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the health and wellbeing of the Mumias and Musanda communities.

Initially Nancy herself had to self-isolate as a precaution following Kenyan government instructions because she’d just arrived from the UK, a country which already had confirmed Coronavirus cases.

Thank you to GardPass Cyber for new Nasio laptop

The provision of a much-needed laptop computer for me as a new team member in Nasio’s Abingdon office couldn’t have come at a better time now that remote working becomes imperative in today’s challenging times.

We want to thank GardPass Cyber, whose co-founder, Neil Passingham is a Nasio Trustee, for their generous donation of a new laptop. This will mean that I can keep working wherever I am over the next critical weeks and months.

With Regret: We’re No Longer Accepting Unsolicited Physical Gifts

For many years we have transported gifts, packages and donations, via our volunteers, to Kenya. This has, up until this point, been unproblematic due to large luggage allowances on flights to Nairobi.

Regrettably this does mean we will no longer be accepting unsolicited donations such as clothing, books, sports equipment etc.

Coronavirus & Travel To Africa

Here at the Nasio Trust we are keeping a close eye on the government’s travel advice regards coronavirus (COVID-19):

As of 10th March 2020 neither Kenya or Tanzania are on the list of countries for which the UK Government has given specific advice but of course this changes almost daily. We recommend anyone planning to travel to Kenya to visit our projects, or to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, also keeps up to date with the Government’s guidelines.

The UN Calls For The End Of Orphanages

In a historic move on December 18th 2019, all 193 member states of the United Nations have formally recognised that orphanages don’t protect children, they harm them, and have called for the progressive elimination of institutional care globally.

Supporters of the Nasio Trust will be aware that our proven model of caring for disadvantaged children in a family-like environment (using a network of amazing Nasio guardians) is a direct reaction to the harm caused by institutionalised care.

As many of our supporters may know, we regularly welcome interns from Oxford University to come and work with us for a period at The Nasio Trust.
